It's absolutely obvious that anyone who still defend his or hers iPhone's usability/modernity/awesomeness/etc. never had the occasion of using a real smartphone, so have nothing to compare it with.
One of the posters here even compares it to his old Moto Razr!
Yeah, the iPhone is definitely better than the (prehistoric) Razr, but the fact remains that is worse than ANY modern smartphone.
I had an iPhone3G for about 3 weeks. After just a few days I got it, I had to buy another phone because incredibly, in this day and age, the iPhone can't be used as a mobile modem with a laptop. I realized immediatly that it was far inferior to the Nokia N958GB I had before, and even inferior tho the N95 I had before that.
So less than a week after I got the iPhone I bought an HTC touchHD , and I realized what the iPhone had hoped to achive but failed miserably to do.
I am aware that the touchHD (and other real smartphones) can't be used in the USA, but for all those outside the "Land of the Free" the choice is a real no-brainer.
Tethering, a-gps, a choice of web browsers, infinite choice of programs and apps, etc. it would be too long to name all the prerogatives smartphones offer compared to the iPhone
So, I managed to sell my iPhone and I bought a second smartphone that i use for work only.
I choose a Samsung Omnia; and again I found it vastly superior to my old iPhone for a million of reason i have no time to enumerate, and sometimes the Omnia's genial mini-touchpad/mouse (which makes the stylus totally redundant) makes me wonder which one of my two phones is the best; and by best I mean: more versatile, easier to use, faster, offering most help in most situations, satisfying more needs and more fun to use... in short which one makes my life and/or my work easier.
I haven't decided yet (after 6 months of ThouchHD and 7 months with the Omnia) which one is the best one, but for sure I know that the iPhone is an enormously inferior contraption: I know because I have tried it and its (better) alternatives.

So I'm not surprised when I hear people (specially americans) telling me how happy they are with their iPhones: they will keep being happy for it until they will have the opportunity of trying a better alternative, and not having to compare it with their old Razr or the crippled versions of phones that american telephone companies keep pushing to the good american folks.
BTW, recently I heard that in the US even Android phones will be crippled so as to loose modem (threading) capacity. Unbeliveable!
Almost like the fact that US citizens that get a subsidized phone must sell their freedom to the phone company for 2YEARS!!!
In 2005,in my country (Denmark) a law has made it illegal to tie people to a phone company for more than 6 month (before it used to be 1year); and guess what?
The price of subsidized phones and laptops has actually decreased, because the companies find it convenient to have the consumers use their networks anyway.
America has taught to us europeans how not to let governements and tyrants cheat us of our freedom, and now, the sad situation of its citizens, is showing us how corporations (or banks and multinationals)can easily take the place of tyrants, kings and dictators, in cheating folks of their freedoms in more subtle (modern?) ways.
Anyway, I guess Im stepping out of the scope of the post...

So I had a 3g moto razr with the Opera browser that was very fast but couldn't accomplish anything. It would surf Amazon, Hotwire etc very fast but I couldn't actually buy or bid on anything. With the iPhone I can accomplish lots of stuff: buy and bid on stuff, navigate with google maps, even send text messages (I'm 45, this stuff is new to me!) all while driving my truck at work. The iPhone makes it fun and easy!

I agree with both Saad and Giuliano, yes more features are better, *If* they are easily useable. The Moto took endless button pushing to do very little, the iPhone just a few taps to accomplish most of what I need to do.

Plus I'm sure in time the iPhone will have all the features Saad talks about, but of course Apple will dole them out very slowly so that we have to buy a new expensive phone every 12-24 months but for me it's worth it. What price time saved?

Just as an aside, in 5 yrs time the most advanced cities in the world will be in the Middle East, China, Russia. The pace of development is amazing. 25 yrs ago I traveled a bit in the Middle East and it was beautiful and the people so very friendly but I would never have guessed it would be leading the world someday.

It is a very exciting time to be a young man in the UAE I believe, Mr Rabia! And yes I'm very envious of your 3.5 network!
